Why we call Makar Sankranti?

Makara Sankranti festival is dedicated to Hindu Sun God Surya Narayana. God Surya enters his son's rasi which is a Makar rasi, when one is entering into another rasi leaving a rasi behind is known as Sankranti according to Hindu. That means the Hindu Sun God Surya Narayana goes to his son's house, and also the son needs to welcome his father and had to do all the rituals like putting a "Tilak" [A temporary Hindu spot at the forehead] and taking blessings by touching his father's feet.

Another story: Makar Sankranthi is the day when God Bhagiratha fulfills his ancestor's [60,000 great uncles] ashes by dipping Ganga in... with help of God Shiva. That is why we go to Ganga and dip on the occasion of Makar Sankranti.

Why we call Makar Sankranti as Khichdi?

In Gorakhpur District of Uttar Pradesh, there is a Temple of God Gorakh. Gorakh was a first person to make "Khichdi"[Indian Food] and to donate which is "Khichdwa", that is why this festival is also known as Khichdi in Bihar & Jhar Khand. And Kalpvasi's take bath at Ganga river and donate Khichdi on this occasion according to the Muhurth[Spiritual Hindu Timings].
